Common types of flashing:
Roof flashing is a sheet metal, such as galvanized steel, aluminum or copper that is used to direct water away from critical areas of the roof. For example, wherever the roof plane meets a vertical surface like a wall or a dormer. Flashing is also installed to surround roof features, such as vents, chimneys and skylights.
Aluminium: Aluminium is a durable, versatile material and is suitable for numerous flashing locations, including in the valleys, around the chimney and at the walls or step-up areas. Can be anodized or powder coated any color.
Galvanized steel: Treated with a zinc coating to slow corrosion, galvanized steel is the least expensive option and the least durable.
Copper. More expensive, but a very durable flashing option.

Shaped like a W, valley metal flashing is designed to protect the junction where two roof slopes meet.
A headwall is a junction where the top of a sloped roof meets a wall. Headwall flashing should extend up behind the exterior wall covering and down over the roofing material, i.e. shingles, slate, tile, metal.
Headwall flashing typically comes bent to 120 degrees and can be easily flattened for roofs with shallower pitches.
Step flashing is an L shaped metal flashing used along the side of a junction of the roof and a vertical surface, such as a wall, skylight, chimney, dormer, etc. Step flashing interweaves with the shingles, tiles, or other roofing material.
